Reminding her that he promised not to write any poetry without telling her about it and reporting that he has determined to write the Vision of Don Roderick; describing the basis for the poem, mentioning that he is selling it for 100 guineas and intending to give the profits to a fund the suffering Portuguese; referencing Mr. Home's pension; discussing money matters and resolving to sell his library and his Edinburgh house and retire to the country so he may make "a provision for my young people without dependence on any one."
